Welcome to Tonka's page. He was our first Amstaff, and a wonderful introduction to the breed. Tonka is an energetic and happy boy, always on the go. He is a standard 19 inches and weighs about 62 lbs. He is a vibrant red brindle and has excellant pigmentation.
Tonka finished his AKC Championship owner/handled. He was OFA'd hips fair and elbows normal. Tonka had his cardiac checked and has 2 heart murmers, that will Thankfully not effect his quality of life. Due to this, he was neutered and is now a full time couch potatoe. He loves to chase tennis balls and can usually be seen with one in his mouth. Tonka has obtained his TT from the American Temperament Test society.
Tonka recently went thru a horrible episode of vestibular disease. To say we were devasted to see him as he was is not enough. Tonka could not stand, he had constant darting movement of the eyes, severe facial paralysis,and vomiting most likely from the eye darting. It came on so suddenly we thought he had a stroke, where the symptoms are very similiar. I reached out to several Amstaff owners who have been in the breed for years and got advice and helpful information. I also discussed Tonka's situation with Dr Natasha Olby, who is working on finding the gene for Ataxia in our breed. Tonka's symptoms slowly subsided and now he is pretty much back to normal. Tonka has slight paralysis on the left side of his face, but he can enjoy all his normal activities again. I have sent blood samples and pedigree information to Dr Olby from Tonka as well as my girls. Anything that can be done to help prevent and/or determine what causes vestibular and Ataxia, please, if any of your dogs experience symptons related to either disease, contact Dr. Olby and I am always willing to help out as well.
